What a Day!!!

I got up at 4:45 to go to Deck 7 to watch us sail into Sydney Harbor. It’s a beautiful sight. One of the guest lecturers was there to explain what we were seeing. The best of course was when the Opera House and bridge came into view. I went back to the room and slept another hour. Then Bunny got up and was feeling miserable-very weak, and dizzy. I got ready for our Panorama tour and she called the nurse. They came and got her with a wheel chair. I had breakfast and then went down to medical to check on her. They said she was dehydrated and had her on an IV. She was resting ok so I went on the tour. It was a pretty nice tour with a good guide and great driver. It was a sunny, warm, summer Saturday and everyone was out. Traffic was horrible. I don’t know how the driver managed, but he did. We made 2 stops. The first was at an overlook where we could see the bridge and opera house. The next stop was at Bondi Beach. We had 30 minutes, so I walked out and got a bag of sand for my collection. I came back, had lunch and went to check on Bunny. She was still getting IV, her second. I was ready to leave for the local market when the doctor came in and said he wanted to send her to the hospital for more tests than they could do on the ship. So, off we went to the ER. I got to ride in the ambulance with her. We had 2 young handsome paramedics and one cute young girl paramedic. Unlike the Us, they are not affiliated with the fire department. They are a separate entity. So we sat in triage for almost an hour, then a bed opened up for her. Then we sat in that room for ages, it seemed. A nurse came in and did the usual work up. The paramedic in the ambulance was very thorough with his questions, so they didn’t need to ask much. After more blood tests, which were inconclusive, the doctor, I think he’s a resident. Said he thought it was a virus and discharged her. By this time it was 9:00 PM. We had been there 6 hours, no food offered. I saw some small bags of Corn Flakes and swiped a couple. I also had a banana in my bag so that was our dinner. We came back to the room, very happy to be there. I opened the curtains to see a glorious view of the Opera House right in front of us. Just looked at what I typed-it’s one paragraph! Sorry about that.

Photos are mostly of bridge and opera house and a shot inside the ambulance. We’re hoping Bunny will be well enough to take a harbor sail tomorrow afternoon.

You were right when you called your blog entry, “What a day!” I am sure that experiencing health care in another country was not on your agenda, but you were fortunate to be in a major, English speaking, city. Chalk it up to another cruising adventure.

Our fingers are crossed that Bunny feels better and the two of you can continue your great adventure together tomorrow. Australia looks and sounds wonderful, other than dehydration. Have fun ladies!
