Bali Day 2
We had an early tour this morning so we had breakfast in the room. That’s such a luxury! It helps save us the time it would take to go to Cafe and back. We had an 8:30 Market and Temple tour.
First we drove about 20 minutes to a city market where the housewives shop daily for food. It was quite a sight. There were many spices, meat, poultry, lamb, vegetables, fruits, and the clothes were on the top floor. There wasn’t anything that would fit us. It wasn’t the best market I’ve seen. The aisles were narrow, things were crammed together and the people weren’t very friendly. I suppose they didn’t like the tourists coming to their market. We were already sopped after being in there for 45 minutes
From there we went to a public temple. We were told to keep shoulders coverED and our knees covered. So we did. We first went to a museum where we could see weapons. I went inside for a minute and came right back out to sit in the shade. It was too hot! Then we went next door to the temple.. I always wondered what Diwali was on the calendar. It is the Hindu new year celebration going on here right now.. So the temple was decorated with flower offerings. If anyone was wearing shorts the put a sarong on them. Everyone else had to have a sash around the waist. It was not a closed temple that we might think of. There was a tower structure in the center with the temple monk performing various activities. The rest was just lawn for people to walk around. There was also an open pavilion on one side. I was really feeling the heat so I went and sat on the raised pavilion floor. We found out we could go back to the bus where it was cool, so we did that. I don’t think I would have made the walk across the street to see the monsters. They construct scary monsters to chase away the bad gods that may have been living around them. Diwali happens every 270 days. They use the lunar calendar. We drove the 30 minutes back to the ship. I took a picture of all the wires on the poles. It’s amazing they held up. The shops, buildings and homes we saw on the way were pretty poor looking. There must be better neighborhoods somewhere around.
‘We came back to the ship and collapsed for a short rest before lunch. I had a light meal so I could have 2 scoops of gelato. It tasted really good!
Tonight we have a Balinese dance program in the theater. We’ll see if it’s different from last night’s show. If pix come out, I’ll share them tomorrow. We are going on a private tour so we’ll get to see more of the island.
Photos are pretty self explanatory, market and temple. I like the last one with the trash cans in it. I don’t have ability to do much editing on the iPad. It would be a beautiful shot without them! The shot on the right of the first row is the market building.
