Cozumel, Mexico

After breakfast in our room, we went to the disembarkation area and walked along the pier to meet our tour. Luckily, the young man who was checking our tickets was only half way along the 200 meter pier. We were too early. We had the second tour at 10:30. It was windy and warm so we walked back to the ship and sat in cool comfort until it was time.We met John, our guide and walked through a shopping arcade to get to the bus. It was pretty hot and muggy. We first drove to an area that was the main plaza of the city. There was an old clock tower and a statue of a fertility goddess. People would walk for hundreds of miles to worship the fertility goddess.
‘From there we drove to an area along the beach where there was a small pyramid. It was the sight of the first Catholic mass performed in Mexico. We walked across the street to look at the Caribbean.

From there, we drove to an arena used for WWE style fighting. Today we saw a program depicting an ancient Mayan worship. It was pretty intense. At one point one of the young men put his feet in a fire. The costumes were very elaborate. Our guide told us one of the feather headdresses could cost $1000! After the show, we headed back to the ship.
We were pretty hungry so we got a burger at the pool bar. My phone plan has free calling from Mexico, so I called my sons to wish them a Merry Christmas. Then back to the room to crash for a while. The heat and humidity made us pretty tired.

After we perked up, we put on Christmas finery to go to dinner. We went to the buffet because we had a big lunch, so we’d only have salads for dinner. Who were we kidding?? It was a Christmas buffet with Chateaubriand, and turkey with all the trimmings. Yummy. Of course we had a bit of dessert too. We walked around a bit until the show started at 9:00. They don’t have elaborate stage shows on Viking. There are several young people who sing and a 4 piece band. Tonight they sang Christmas songs. It was a nice show.

I told you last night about the jacket and tote bag we got. I’m including the photo of it tonight. Tomorrow is a sea day and we have our activities planned.
