Zurich on our own
Thecruise officially ended yesterday. It was departure day so we got free breakfast, always a good thing. Verna has come down with a nasty cold. We walked to the Co op, which is called the Coop. It’s a half block down the street. We were on a mission for chocolate. We all loaded up, something else to try to get in the suitcase!
‘Betty and Rudy headed off on the tram to the main train station. They wanted to get info on our day trip tomorrow. Verna and I met them at the Christmas Market in the station. There is a huge Christmas tree decorated with with Lindt chocolate ornaments. Again there were mostly food and drink stalls and it was crowded. I don’t think the Swiss work very much. We found a table to sit, then took turns getting food. Betty got a sausage on a stick wrapped with bread and slathered in mustard. I went for a ham and cheese crepe, Verna had a sausage and Rudy had a Lindt chocolate crepe. We walked around for an hour , then took the tram back.
‘We rested up for the night markets. Verna stayed in, she seems to be getting worse.. I hope she’s well enough to go on our day trip to Lucerne tomorrow. We will get a package that is train there and back, a bus tour and a ride up a cable car to the top of a mountain. Hope it works out!
Betty, Rudy and I took the tram back to the train station, walked across the street to a museum that was a castle. The market is called Illuminati and it is illuminated. The stalls are in an inner courtyard with the walls all lit up and large metal frameworks with light designs on them. It was only for eating and drinking. There was a Hendricks Gin booth doing good business. It was very crowded and we didn’t spend much time there. We then went down a stairway we thought was a tunnel under the street. We were in a huge underground shopping mall that went on forever. We walked a ways and came up beside the train station. Just to our right was another street market. It was the Zurichweinachtenallee.. They like to put many words together. I think it means Zurich Christmas Walk. We went in under the sign and started walking through the street. The market must have been a mile long. I think the street is a street closed to traffic for shopping. We made it halfway. Then we found a restaurant and had some dinner. After that we headed back through the station to the tram. It was a nice day but I think I’m done with Christmas markets-unless there’s one in Lucerne! And they didn’t have ceramic mugs, only paper cups!!
